Living abroad is such an eye-opening experience. It not only gives you the opportunity to see how others function in the world, but it provides you with an outsider’s perspective when returning “home” to the US. I have lived in Germany for over 6 years, and thus, my country of residence also influences what stands out and “shocks” me upon returning. Rules – Germany is a HUGE rule following country, but Americans do not have a problem breaking the rules! Kid can’t get into their school of choice, so let’s buy their way in. No eating or drinking, well, I’ll keep the lid on my coffee. Handicap parking, I’ll sit here with my car running while my passenger runs in really quick. 10 items or less lanes only apply when you are the one in the hurry. Land of the free-to-do-what-I-want-to-do-when-I-want-to-do-it. Driving – This again, goes back to the rules, but worthy of its own bullet point. I am flabbergasted to see so many people run red lights in the US. When the light turns yellow, it is like a race to run through it rather than SLOW down as the color indicates. Other examples within driving alone, are the people who hang in the passing lane for miles and miles regardless of passing cars. It is a PASSING lane, move over, pass, then move back into the regular lane. And finally, the MERGE. The merge is meant to be a zipper effect, the most efficient means of reducing two lanes into one. Zipper, meaning, take turns. In the US, however, this is somehow incomprehensible, so the merger may wait for eternity until someone “allows” them to merge. Americans take food everywhere as if they will starve before getting to a proper meal. Children no sooner step off the soccer field and they are handed a bag of snacks and a juice box. Apparently, no one has time to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee because they must get it from a drive-thru and then carry it in a mug with them at all times. And that frappawhatchacallit sugar bomb that you bought with it for your kid as a reward, is actually hurting them. Yet, we can’t talk about it, or we are fat shaming. And that frappawhatchacallit sugar bomb that you bought with it for your kid as a reward, is actually hurting them. Yet, we can’t talk about it, or we are fat shaming. Over-development – Do we really need that new CVS right across the street from the Walgreens? Another bank branch ½ mile from the last? And what is the deal with Vape shops? The US has such a vast amount of space, yet it’s like convenience on steroids. Stores are ginormous as are the parking lots. You can’t park your car and walk to the places that you need to go, rather you must continually drive from place to place to get to everything done. Ironic how Americans are obsessed with exercise but can’t get out of their car to pick up the dry cleaning. It not only gives you the opportunity to see how others function in the world, but it provides you with an outsider’s perspective when returning “home” to the US. I have lived in Germany for over 6 years, and thus, my country of residence also influences what stands out and “shocks” me upon returning. Rules – Germany is a HUGE rule following country, but Americans do not have a problem breaking the rules! Kid can’t get into their school of choice, so let’s buy their way in. No eating or drinking, well, I’ll keep the lid on my coffee. Handicap parking, I’ll sit here with my car running while my passenger runs in really quick. 10 items or less lanes only apply when you are the one in the hurry. Land of the free-to-do-what-I-want-to-do-when-I-want-to-do-it. Driving – This again, goes back to the rules, but worthy of its own bullet point. I am flabbergasted to see so many people run red lights in the US. When the light turns yellow, it is like a race to run through it rather than SLOW down as the color indicates. Other examples within driving alone, are the people who hang in the passing lane for miles and miles regardless of passing cars. It is a PASSING lane, move over, pass, then move back into the regular lane. And finally, the MERGE. The merge is meant to be a zipper effect, the most efficient means of reducing two lanes into one. Zipper, meaning, take turns. In the US, however, this is somehow incomprehensible, so the merger may wait for eternity until someone “allows” them to merge.
